About Crete

Crete is the largest Greek island with population over 600K inhabitants. It constitutes the southernmost island of Europe, surrounded by the sea of Crete (to the north) and Libyan sea (to the south). The island is divided into four administrative prefectures: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion (where the capital of Crete is situated), and Lasithi; the two international airports are located in Chania and Heraklion.

The coastline of Crete presents endless sandy beaches, while there are a number of small uninhabited islands nearby, the most famous of which are Gavdos, Koufonissi, and Spinalonga. Popular archeological sites to visit are the palaces of Knossos and Festos, the Venetian fortress in Rethymno, as well as the castle of Frangokastello.
